Meet the members of the group

Paul Lenz- Trumpet
Paul holds the position of principal trumpet in the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, Reno Chamber Orchestra and the Nevada Opera Orchestra . He is on the trumpet staff at University of Nevada, Reno and Truckee Meadows Community College. Paul also is the Bach trumpet representative for Northern Nevada. He is also the founder and responsible for the name of the Great Basin Brass Quintet. Can you believe that Paul is a 7 time Nevada state archery champion?
Larry M. Engstrom- Trumpet
Professor Larry Engstrom holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from California State University at Fresno, and Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Trumpet Performance from the University of North Texas, where he was jazz soloist with their renowned One o’ Clock Jazz Band. He currently performs with the Collective (five CDs recorded to date, Once and Again, Balance, Boats, North, and Contemplation), the Great Basin Brass Quintet, and he performs regularly with many other Northern Nevada music ensembles. From 1988-2001 he was Principal Trumpet with the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra and Lead (1st) Trumpet in Harrah’s John Carlton Orchestra.
Dr. Engstrom currently serves as Director of the School of the Arts, Director of the Reno Jazz Festival, and as a teacher of Applied Trumpet at the University of Nevada, Reno. Prior administrative posts include Chair of the Department of Music and Dance from 2000-2003, and Director of Jazz Studies from 1989-2000.

John Lenz- French Horn
JOHN LENZ is serving his final semester as professor of music at the University of Nevada, where he has taught cello, horn, and theory for 37 years. He currently serves as principal hornist of the Reno Philharmonic, the Reno Chamber Orchestra, and the Great Basin Brass, and is the cellist (and hornist when needed) of the Telluride Chamber Players, and the Argenta Ensemble. A resident of Reno since 1951, he received degrees from the University of Nevada and the New England Conservatory in Boston before joining the UNR faculty in 1972.

Leonard Neidhold- Trombone
Leonard Neidhold is a trombonist and music educator from Reno, Nevada. He is in his tenth year as director of bands at B. D. Billinghurst Middle School and in his 18th year teaching all levels of instrumental music for Washoe County School District .
Serving as an adjunct member of the University of Nevada Reno music faculty, he has conducted large jazz ensembles since 1991, most recently University of Nevada - Reno’s acclaimed Jazz Lab I. Before moving to Reno, Mr. Neidhold worked in South Florida playing shows, musical theater, in orchestras, and Latin bands. He now performs regularly in the Reno-Tahoe area casino showrooms and performance venues with artists that have included Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Lou Rawls, and Nancy Wilson.
He is Principal Trombone of the Reno Philharmonic, Reno Chamber, Nevada Opera, and Nevada Festival Ballet orchestras and recently became trombonist with the Great Basin Brass. He has toured with the Arctic Chamber Orchestra and Alaska Brass in China, Switzerland, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Spain. His recording credits include featured solo work with the Reno Jazz Orchestra, the Brian Landrus Project and vocalist Cami Thompson, section work with numerous big bands, and a variety of session work in Dallas, TX and Miami, FL. He is a frequent clinician in Nevada, California and Washington. Mr. Neidhold has a Bachelor of Music from North Texas State University (University of North Texas) and a Master of Music in Jazz Pedagogy from the University of Miami, Coral Gables.

Russ Dickman- Tuba
Russ Dickman has been with the Great Basin Brass Quintet for the past 25 years. He has also been serving as principal tubist with the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra since 1969. Russ performs in the Reno Festival Ballet and the Nevada Opera Orchestras when needed.
Russ is a professional photographer and co-owns Hartung & Dickman Photographic Studios in Sparks, Nevada. Russ and his wife also own High Sierra Coffee Roastery in Chilcoot, California and roast gourmet coffees from around the world for your home or business. He makes his home with his wife Lynda, three horses, eight cats and a very smart border collie named Biscuit near Frenchman’s Lake, California.
